Summer Hydration Tips

During the summer, many people find themselves getting dehydrated. It’s surprising the amount of water that you can lose, and you might not realize that you’re losing it because you’re staying so busy. But internal heating systems zap you of a lot of moisture. Here are some important hydration tips.

Wear Light Layers

Wearing lighter clothes in the warmer months will help keep you cool so that you aren’t losing as much water through sweating. Moisturize your skin to prevent additional water from being removed from your system. Wearing lighter layers also helps so that your body doesn’t have to work so hard keeping you cool, especially when you’re out and about.

Match Your Drink to Your Activity

There are different types of hydration. If you’re active, you might want a drink that has a little sugar or salt in it (just a little) so that it’s got electrolytes as well. If you’re hanging around your house, though, it’s better to drink straight water or water that has a touch of flavoring in it. That’s because, in general, water is always going to be the healthiest all-around beverage for you.

Eat Fruit

Did you know that cats rarely drink water in the wild? When cats hunt, they consume most of their water through their food. While people can’t do that, you still consume a decent amount of water through your food. By eating food with high water content, you can stave off dehydration. Even better, eating high water content foods is linked to generally good diets because they reduce the amount of sugars and calories you might eat.

Add Some Flavor

Sometimes, the best way to stay hydrated is to give yourself a little treat. If you’re tired of plain water, try adding some fruit or veggies to enhance the flavor. Make it fruity by adding in some of your favorite summertime treats like watermelon, strawberries or lemon. You could even go for a spa water taste by adding in cucumber and mint.

Limit Your Alcohol

Here’s a tip. Both alcohol and caffeine can potentially dehydrate you. If you want to stay hydrated through the summer, be aware of this. While you absolutely can drink caffeine and alcohol, make sure you’re drinking an equal amount of water along with it. This will prevent you from dehydrating too much.
