How to Stay Hydrated: At Home

Your body needs water to survive! Water is a necessity for the hydration and lubrication of your joints, protecting your internal tissues, regulating body temperature, protecting your brain and removing water from your body through sweating, urinating and bowel movements. Water is actually the best thing for your body. Unfortunately, many people struggle with getting enough of it. When your body doesn’t have enough water, dehydration occurs, which can be fatal if it goes untreated. Trying to drink more water can seem almost impossible, but with a few simple tricks, you can actually give your body the water it needs and enjoy doing it. Here are a few tips to help you drink more water while at home.

Add Flavor

A fun and easy way to make your water more exciting is by adding flavor to it. Fruit infused water is a great way to make sure you get the recommended amount of water and you get fresh fruit and/or herbs in the process. Simply add some strawberries, cucumber, mint and/or lavender to your water pitcher at home and keep in the refrigerator. The longer the fruit and water seep, the tastier it will be.

Drink a Glass of Water After Using the Bathroom

Developing the habit of drinking water after each trip to the bathroom is a great way to replenish the water your body has lost during urination. Whether you are at home, work or school, have a bottle or glass of water ready in the kitchen or at your desk; if it is in front of you, it will make it easier to remember to drink it. The more water you drink, the more you will have to go to the bathroom; however, this means you are getting more water as well as removing the toxins from your body, so it’s a win-win.

Drink Water Before a Meal

If you are preparing dinner at home, have a glass of water nearby to sip while you are preparing the meal and if you are out for dinner, ask for a glass of water when giving your drink order. Whether you are preparing a snack for movie night or sitting at your desk at work, have a glass of water nearby to sip on; over time you’ll find that you are drinking more water without even thinking about it.

Use an App

If you are someone who thinks apps make activities much easier, then there’s good news! There are apps that will allow you to keep up with how many glasses you have consumed throughout the day. Search for daily reminder apps on your phone, set them to remind you to drink more water and you’ll soon be on your way to hydration and a healthy body.

Invest in a Filter

Depending on the area where you live, filtered water may be a necessity. But, even if the water in your area tastes good and is of good quality, installing a filter will improve the taste and quality, which can encourage you to drink it more. There are several types of filter systems available to improve your tap water.

Along with drinking water, there are plenty of water-rich foods that you can include in your diet that will help you get the extra water your body craves, such as cucumbers or watermelon. When trying to increase your daily water intake, consider setting deadlines for yourself. For instance, tell yourself that you have to finish a full glass within a certain time frame.
